Looking back on a successful September Each September we encourage our community to get involved with Alopecia Awareness Month; 30 days dedicated to raising awareness of alopecia and raising funds for Alopecia UK. Fundraising During September 2024, over 50 amazing individuals signed up to be Charity Champions! Not only did they raise lots of awareness with their activities in Alopecia Awareness Month, they also managed to raise over £33,000 for Alopecia UK! We asked our Charity Champions to 'Go the Distance' and the variety of activities undertaken by our Charity Champions was wonderful to see. As well as the many running events, we also had mountain climbs, coffee mornings, swimming challenges, walking challenges and more. We continue to be blown-away by the creativity and passion of our community, and it is so greatly appreciated. Alopecia UK cannot continue the work it does without the fundraising support of those affected by alopecia. Awareness We were delighted to see the new 'My Alopecia and Me' short documentary film land on the BBC iPlayer just before the start of September. Alopecia UK is proud of the part it played in this awareness piece, supporting the producers in finding contributors and providing information. We were excited to see the film played in its entirety on BBC Breakfast on Saturday 31st August - we couldn't have asked for a better start to Alopecia Awareness Month 2024! If you haven't seen 'My Alopecia and Me' yet, you can watch it here. We were thrilled to announce that 10-year-old Tommy Weeden was the winner of our 2024 Hannah Dennis Alopecia Awareness Award. Alopecia UK received some brilliant nominations and, as ever, it was a difficult job for the judges. As you can see, Tommy was happy to receive his award and we look forward to finding our 2025 Hannah Dennis Alopecia Awareness Award winner next year. Nominations will open in May 2025. Over on our social media, Alopecia UK put out more than 500 posts from our Facebook, Instagram, X (Twitter) and LinkedIn accounts, reaching hundreds of thousands of people with a theme of #WeAreWorthIt. The majority of our social media content this September included content from our community. We shared photos of some of the brilliant children who attended our Kingswood Residential Activity Weekend in the Summer (Jamie, Madeleine and Nathaniel pictured below): We also featured stories from adults affected by alopecia by way of photos, videos and blogs. Posts included the challenges people with alopecia face as well as ways in which people are living well with alopecia, all with the theme of those with alopecia being worthy of care and compassion. And it wouldn't be Alopecia Awareness Month without some education too! These are a few examples of some of our 'Back to Basics' posts that we put out during September: We also shared a few posts related to a small 'snapshot' survey that we put out in the Summer: We had a wide variety of content. You can read them all by scrolling back through our social media posts from last month. For Alopecia UK, alopecia awareness is not just something practiced in September. We will continue to raise awareness of the psychological impact of alopecia, and advocate for both fair treatment pathways and living well with alopecia, all year round. The funds raised in September have provided a much-needed boost to our income. Supporting Alopecia UK beyond September We continue to seek regular support all year round. Income from regular donors allows our small charity to plan, grow, and sustain our vital work that we know makes a real different in the lives of those in our community. When you become a regular donor, you don't just support Alopecia UK - you become an ally in our mission to improve the lives of those affected by alopecia.
