Steroid injections are a treatment option offered by some dermatologists for the treatment of alopecia areata. If you’ve been told that Adcortyl™ or Kenalog™ injections are no longer available, you might be worried about how this affects your treatment. Here’s what you need to know.

Why are Adcortyl™ and Kenalog™ no longer available?

Both Adcortyl and Kenalog were licensed brands of a steroid medicine called triamcinolone acetonide. These brands of triamcinolone acetonide have been discontinued in the UK for  operational reasons, not because of safety concerns.

What this means for you

You may still be able to receive steroid injections – but your doctor might need to use a different brand of triamcinolone acetonide of steroid. The British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) circulated a table of specialist importers to its members so dermatologists should have information of how they can source different brands of triamcinolone acetonide injection products from abroad that are unlicensed in the UK.

What you can do

  • Talk to your doctor: Ask what alternatives are available for your condition. If your dermatologist tells you that steroid injections are no longer available in the UK, you could suggest that they get in touch with the BAD for advice, as Alopecia UK understands that imported, unlicensed triamcinolone acetonide alternatives to the two discontinued brands are available. However, these may not be as readily available in clinics and pharmacies as the previous licensed brands.
  • Discuss your concerns: If injections have worked well for you before, let your healthcare team know.
  • Consider other options: Your doctor can help you weigh up the pros and cons of other treatments.

Summary

The discontinuation of Adcortyl and Kenalog does not mean steroid injections are no longer possible. Your doctor will need to explore appropriate alternatives to continue with this course of treatment.
