A new app has launched in the UK to support people living with alopecia areata. The Onballa UK app includes the following features:

  • Hair Gallery:
Users can upload photos to visually track changes in their hair (loss or regrowth) over time.
  • Mood Tracker:
The app allows users to log their mood, helping them identify potential connections between their emotional state and their alopecia.
  • Doctor Discussion Reports:
Users can generate reports summarising their hair gallery and mood tracker entries, which can be shared with their doctor during consultations.
  • Well-being Exercises:
The app provides access to a library of wellness tips and exercises to support overall well-being.
  • Resources:
Users can access articles, videos, and stories related to alopecia areata.
  • Support:
The app connects users with support groups and advocates within the alopecia community.

The Onballa UK app has been created by Pfizer. It is primarily aimed at those affected by alopecia areata, however we believe that those affected by other types of hair loss may also benefit from some of the app's features. It is not a requirement that you have alopecia areata to use the app but please be aware that the articles, videos and stories featured in the app all relate to alopecia areata. You need to be at least 16 years old and a resident of the UK to use the app.

We believe the app has the potential to simplify the sharing of alopecia experiences with doctors. It could make it easier and quicker to show details of progression of hair loss or regrowth, without trawling your phone's photo library for the necessary image. The combination of mood tracker to produce reports to discuss with doctors may help to get the most out of medical appointments.
